1889 ElectionThe 1892 General Election was the ninth general election to the Ivonian Parliament. The four-term Dominion Party Government, led by James Sadler, faced off against the Conservative Party, under Seward Spalding. The previous election had been a close fight between the Conservative Party and Country Party for the prime position among the opposition parties, with the Conservative Party triumphing by a clear margin. The Country Party contested the 1892 election in full, but it was generally apparent that the party was a spent force, with the dynamic Spalding a much more prominent figure.
A census had been conducted in 1890, which revealed that the Ivonian electorate had exceeded 2.4 million voters. The subsequent reapportionment of the Ivonian Parliament would have led to Westmoreland losing a seat to South Yorkshire, due to slower than average growth in the former. A desire to not reduce the parliamentary representation of any province led to the expansion of Parliament to 25 seats, up from the previous size of 21.
The 1889 election had been a quiet affair for the Dominion Party, with a majority beyond doubt during the campaign. This was not to be the case for the 1892 election, as the Conservative Party only needed a 3.7% swing in order to win government on the old boundaries. Even as the seat redistribution had altered constituency boundaries, the notional margins indicated that the Dominion Party would have secured 18 seats on the new boundaries, to the Conservative Party's 7. With a new majority-defining threshold of 13, this meant that the Dominion Party went into the 1892 election with a notional six seat majority, compared with the five seat majority it had won in 1889.
James Sadler, already Ivonia's longest serving Prime Minister, indicated that he would continue for another campaign in early 1892. The Dominion Party campaigned on an expansion of industry and a broader electric power grid. The Conservative Party called for a change of government after twelve years of Dominion rule. They promised a new, dynamic cabinet, which would strengthen Ivonia's economy through investment in infrastructure coupled with protective tariffs. The Country Party, no longer a competitive force in Ivonian politics, campaigned heavily along the Southshore coastal seats it had lost in 1889 on local issues.
Sadler went to the Governor-General on November 14, 1892, and the election was set for December 19, 1892. The Whitaker Herald pre-election survey found the favorabilities for the parties as 38% in favor of the Country Party, 76% in favor of the Conservative Party and 72% in favor of the Dominion Party.
The Dominion Party remained the largest party in Parliament, and gained two of the four newly created seats. However, with the expansion in the number of seats, the party saw its seat share decline slightly, although it still retained well over two-thirds of the chamber. The Conservative Party gained the other two newly created seats, but lost the Westmoreland seat of South Coast to the Country Party.
All three parties were encouraged by the results. The Country Party regained parliamentary representation with its victory in South Coast, and came within two percent of victory in neighboring South Country. The Conservative Party was now in striking distance of majority government, with several Dominion-held seats sitting on small margins under four percent. The Dominion Party, for its part, remained the largest party after twelve years in power and could afford a loss of five seats before losing government.
James Sadler went to the Governor-General on December 21st and received his commission, for a fifth term.
