1892 ElectionThe 1895 General Election was the tenth general election to the Ivonian Parliament. The five-term Dominion Party Government faced off against the Conservative Party, under Seward Spalding. The previous election had seen James Sadler, the long-time Dominion Party Prime Minister, retain government despite a small swing away from the party. Already the longest-serving Prime Minister in Ivonian history, he received his commission from the Governor-General in December 1892 for a fifth term.
This would be a term he would not complete, as he died in office on March 8, 1894. He would be replaced by Ramsey Hawkins, the MP for the Westmoreland seat of Lakeville, who would be sworn in as Prime Minister on March 9th after an emergency meeting of cabinet.
The Conservative Party reiterated its call for a change in government after fifteen years in power, saying that the experience of James Sadler had now left government. Campaigning forcefully, they hoped to wrest back power for the right-of-center for the first time in more than a decade.
The Country Party focused its campaign on the Westmoreland coastal seats it had done well in two years prior. Focusing exclusively there, they made no major attempts at a national campaign, although they fielded candidates in every seat.
Hawkins went to the Governor-General on November 11, 1895, and the election was set for December 16, 1895. The Whitaker Herald pre-election survey found the favorabilities for the parties as 51% in favor of the Country Party, 78% in favor of the Conservative Party and 64% in favor of the Dominion Party.
The Dominion Party, despite losing four seats, retained a bare majority of one in the new Parliament, having secured 13 seats. The results came as an immense disappointment for the Conservative Party, which fell a few hundred votes short of forming majority government, falling just short in the New Anglia seat of Outer Anglia and the South Yorkshire seat of South York. These results were attributed to a recovery in the Country Party's expense - enough of a recovery to siphon off a few votes here and there and deny Conservative candidates victory.
Hawkins received his commission from the Governor General on December 18, and was sworn into government in his own right shortly thereafter.
