1904 ElectionThe 1907 General Election was the fifteenth general election to the Ivonian Parliament. The incumbent Country Party government, led by Marcus Henson, sought a third term in power.
The previous election had seen the political right consolidate under the Country Party, easily beating the divided left. The time since that election had not helped the left find common purpose, as there were competing schools of thought regarding the best way to beat the right.
There were significant figures on the left who believed that a single left-wing party was critical to regaining power. They were led by Christopher Crawford, a moderate member of the Socialist Party. In 1906, he led a faction of the Socialist Party out to a new party, which he called the Labour Party. He stated that the purpose of the new party was to deliver results for the working class, and that socialism itself was merely a means to achieve that goal rather than the goal itself. Allying himself with similarly-minded people who left the Dominion Party, he placed himself ideologically in between the Socialist and Dominion parties.
Marcus Henson, secure with the largest majority in Ivonian history, was content to run the full course of the term. Seeing the now thrice-divided left as his opponents, he was not worried about retaining power. The campaign, from his perspective, was a quiet affair. The left, meanwhile, campaigned furiously amongst themselves, as they all sought to gain the trust of the majority of left-wing voters in order to displace the other parties.
Henson went to the Governor-General on May 20, 1907, and the election was set for June 17, 1907.
The Whitaker Herald survey found the favorabilities for the parties as 62% in favor of the Country Party, 52% in favor of the Dominion Party, 58% in favor of the Labour Party and 39% in favor of the Socialist Party.
The Country Party retained a firm hold over Ivonia's politics, holding to all 24 of the seats it held heading into the election. The Labour Party emerged as the largest party on the left, winning the seat of Outer North Bay from the Socialist Party. Both the Dominion Party and the Socialist Party saw substantial declines in their vote share, putting them firmly out of reach of winning any seats in the future at all.
Calls for unification around Labour echoed across left-wing publications in the aftermath of the election. These would not bear fruit immediately, but the importance of these calls increased with every passing year with the left appearing to have been left in the distance behind the Country Party.
The results were the first time a party had won a majority of the popular vote since 1886, a period of twenty-one years.
