1907 ElectionThe 1910 General Election was the sixteenth general election to the Ivonian Parliament. The incumbent Country Party government, led by Marcus Henson, sought a fourth term in power.
The previous election had seen the emergence of the Labour Party as part of attempts to provide a single force on the left to counter the Country Party. These were not successful, and the previous election had seen the three separate left-wing parties win only a single seat between them.
In the aftermath of the election's results, the Socialist Party voted to disband in favor of the Labour Party in the interest of winning power. The Dominion Party - one of Ivonia's original parties - stubbornly refused to join forces with the other more left-wing parties. The Dominion Party's powerbase was the mercantile class in the biggest cities, and although they opposed the rural interests of the Country Party they were not enthused with joining forces with the labour unions and socialists further on the left.
As a census had not been conducted in nearly twenty years, the Country Party passed legislation to conduct a national census and parliamentary redistribution. There was significant pressure to make the process of carrying out a census, as well as review parliamentary delegations for the provinces, on a regular cadence. This was added to the Census Act of 1908, whereupon a periodic review of the national populace and electorate would be undertaken at least every three years, or between elections if sufficient time was given. The size of Parliament was expanded to 33 seats, out of a desire to maintain individual constituency sizes at about one hundred thousand voters.
Prime Minister Henson went to the Governor-General on May 16, 1910, and the election was set for June 20, 1910.
The Whitaker Herald survey found the favorabilities for the parties as 56% in favor of the Country Party, 44% in favor of the Dominion Party and 69% in favor of the Labour Party.
The merger of the Labour and Socialist Parties to be wildly successful, and allowed the left to win a whole swathe of seats they had previously been unable to win in. Despite this, the three-term Country Party was re-elected even as they lost seats.
The Labour leader, Christopher Crawford, would serve as Leader of the Opposition, and the Country Party would govern with the smallest majority in more than a decade.
The Henson cabinet was sworn in on June 24, 1910. Marcus Henson viewed the results with deep caution: indeed, a few hundred vote different in the seat of South York would have been enough for the Labour Party to win government.
The Dominion Party saw a modest increase in their vote share although they did not come close to challenging either major party in any seat. Despite calls for them to merge with the major parties, with a rising split between the left and right factions of the party, Dominion Party leadership stood steadfast in their plans and policies.
