1919 General Election

1913 Election

The 1919 General Election was the eighteenth general election to the Ivonian Parliament. The election was the first election to be held since 1913, as the 1916 General Election was delayed due to the First World War. The incumbent Country Party government under Marcus Henson sought re-election against the Labour Party.

Marcus Henson had served as Prime Minister since 1903 and became the longest serving Prime Minister on February 9, 1917, surpassing the previous record held by James Sadler since 1894.

The Great War had completely disrupted Ivonian politics as Ivonian citizens were called to arms to fight in Europe. The Ivonian Government had already contributed funds towards the defense of the Empire. The Royal Ivonian Navy had comprised of various vessels which could, in times of war, be placed under Royal Navy control. The expansion of the war and clear indications that it would not be a short-term affair led to a sizable increase in the Ivonian military budget. This would continue through the remainder of the war, expanding over time. This massive military spending placed a considerable strain on the Ivonian finances, with increases in taxation and war bonds. By the end of the war, Ivonia would emerge with sizable public debt.

The major political crisis of the era was the Conscription Crisis in 1916, which arose after the Ivonian government proposed the creation of the Ivonian Draft Board with a view towards the enablement of the widespread conscription of able-bodied men. Support for this proposal led to splits in both the Labour and Country Parties. In the end, voluntary enrollment was sufficient to delay plans for a wider draft long enough for the Americans to enter the war and for the Government to subsequently shelve plans to enact the measures. Regardless, both the Labour and Country Parties saw splits which led to the establishment of the Republic Party on the left, and the National Party on the right.

The Republic Party was an anti-Empire party which called for the end of the Dominion, with its replacement by an Ivonian Republic. The National Party, meanwhile, believed that the Conscription Act should have been enacted and decried the weakness of the government in its inability to pass the act.

The voter rolls and population figures were updated in between the 1913 and 1919 elections. These showed that the electorate of Ivonia had grown from 3,434,552 people to 3,769,300 people - marking nearly ten percent population growth over those six years. The number of seats was expanded from 33 to 37 to account for population growth, in order to keep the average number of voters per seat near one hundred thousand.

Prime Minister Henson went to the Governor-General on March 10, 1919, and the election was set for April 14, 1919.

The Whitaker Herald survey found the favorabilities for the parties as 48% in favor of the Country Party, 64% in favor of the Dominion Party, 70% in favor of the Labour Party, 63% in favor of the National Party and 41% in favor of the Republic Party.

Results

The results were among the most chaotic in Ivonian history, with many seats where only a few percent seperated the top four parties from each other. The Labour Party was able to decisively win government after the split on the right proved fatal to the conservative chances in a number of seats. Christopher Crawford, after years of waiting, would now serve as Prime Minister.

The Country Party remained the official opposition despite losing ten seats and coming third in the popular vote. Marcus Henson, after serving as Prime Minister for nearly sixteen years, stepped down as Country Party leader shortly after the election. He was replaced as head of the Country Party by George Penn.

Christopher Crawford visited the Governor-General on April 17 to receive his commission as Prime Minister. He was duly sworn in shortly thereafter and became the first left-wing Prime Minister since the Dominion Government had fallen in 1898. He would soon set out to enact a number of policies that left-wing activists had dreamed about for years.
